Twenty years is a significant milestone for any business, but in the fast-paced world of scientific equipment and international distribution, it’s a testament to resilience and evolution.
To celebrate our 20th Anniversary, our CEO, Rory Geoghegan, and Operations Manager & Director, Susan Labuschagne, sat down for a candid conversation. They looked back at the early days, the shifting landscape of the scientific industry, and what the futureholds for Red Box Direct.

The Early Days: From Nutgrove to Now
Every great story has a humble beginning. For Red Box Direct, that beginning was a single office in an Enterprise Center in Nutgrove, Dublin.
"I remember three of us sharing one room," Rory recalls. "We were trying to pack boxes while being told to stay quiet so someone else could answer the phone for a customer".
From the early days of managing every detail, including the office cleaning rota, the first decade was about getting established. As Rory puts it, "It took us the first decade to really get established... and the second decade has just been so much fun".
Adapting to a Digital Industry
The scientific industry has seen a massive shift since 2006. Perhaps the biggest change Rory has witnessed is the move away from traditional trade shows toward digital marketing and social media.
While face-to-face interactions remain important, digital platforms have become the primary way to engage in a global discourse with customers. Red Box Direct has evolved alongside these trends, ensuring that our partners’ innovative lab equipment reaches the right researchers through modern, effective channels.
"Integrity is what you do when people aren't looking."
The Secret Sauce: Systems and People
One of the most surprising lessons Rory learned over the last 20 years was the need to step back from being a "control freak". The key to growth was realizing that great people need great systems to blossom.
"Putting in place really good systems allows people who are really capable and excellent to blossom and get on and do things on their own," Rory explains. This focus on quality people and robust infrastructure has allowed Red Box to scale without losing the personal touch we are known for.
Building Long-term Trust
Trust is a word often used in business, but at Red Box Direct, it is defined by two specific elements: Openness and Integrity.
For Rory, trust isn't just a marketing term; it’s a differentiator.
"We’re very, very open with the clients we work with; about everything that goes on. Integrity is actually living it".
By being genuine and transparent for over 20 years, Red Box has built a reputation that allows scientific manufacturers to expand into European and Asian markets with total confidence.
Looking Ahead: The Next 20 Years
As we look toward the future, the goal is clear: Expansion.
The scientific industry is vast, and we believe we have only scratched the surface. Our mission for the coming years is to bring our unique model of service, integrity, and trust to even more clients globally, maintaining the same high standards that got us here.
As Susan noted during the chat, "It’s been such a great privilege to be part of the Red Box story". We want to thank our team, our partners, and the scientific community for being part of this journey.
